KDSmart Version 3.1 - New Features¶

Along with many usability and bug fixes, the newest version of KDSmart (v3.1) has implemented several new features that provide more options for users to score trials. There are four new features that are outlined in this page:

Using categorical other traits;

Block selection;

Field scoring view; and

Bulk scoring.

This page will continually be updated as the new KDSmart version is tested. Any feedback or questions are more than welcome and can be sent to taylorp@diversityarrays.com

Categorical Other Traits¶

The latest version of KDSmart (v3.1) has introduced the a new trait type called the categorical other (cat_other) trait. This is like a regular categorical trait (is scored with categories such as different colours) except that it has an extra category called ‘Other’ which is an editable text field. This means that a cat_other trait is essentially a categorical and text trait combined.

There has been changes to some aspects of KDSmart to accommodate this new trait and this tutorial will demonstrate some of the changes plus some helpful hints for using cat_other traits. This will include activities such as:

Creating a cat_other trait;

Adding that trait to a trial; and

Scoring a cat_other trait.

Creating a Categorical Other Trait¶

As traits can be created within KDSmart, an extra option has been added so that categorical traits can be created with an other field. The video and accompanying instructions below demonstrate how to create a cat_other trait.

1.	Navigate to the Traits Screen as seen in the above image.
2.	Select the Add Trait Button which will display the Add Trait Screen.
3.	Choose a name for the trait by entering it in the text field and selecting the Use Button. If the trait name is already taken then the Use Button will be disabled.
4.	For the new trait, choose a: Alias (optional); Description; and Trial unit (what is being measured; such as colour). Then the data type must be set to Categorical.
5.	Enter the your categories in the Choices Field. Select the Add Button after entering each choice to add it to the list of categories. Each one should appear below and you can select the Trash Icon if you need to delete any.
6.	Select the Enable Other Checkbox and then name the other category.

Adding Categorical Other Traits to a Trial¶

Categorical Other traits are added to existing trials the same way that any other traits are. If you already have a trial loaded into KDSmart, then please see the video below if you would like a refresher on how to add traits to a trial.

1.	Select the Trial Details Button to view details of a trial.
2.	Select the Edit Traits Button. This will display the Trait/Instance Screen.
3.	Select the Add Traits Button then choose a trait/s to add to the trial.

1.	Start scoring a trial so that the Configuration Screen will open.
2.	Swipe to the Trait/Instance Screen.
3.	Select the Add Traits Button then choose a trait/s to add to the trial.

Scoring Categorical Other Traits¶

Scoring a cat_other Trait is much like scoring any other type of trait. The video below will provide a short refresher and will include tips for creating an other category.

1.	To start scoring, find a trial and select the Scoring Button.
2.	Configure your trial how you wish and then select the Start Scoring Button.
3.	On the plot you want to score, select the empty trait value (‘-‘) to navigate to the Trait Scoring Screen.
4.	On a categorical other trait, choose a category to score the plot/sub-plot.
5.	The score the other category, select the radio button and then the Edit Icon which will display a text field to enter what you would like to name the other value.

Selecting a Block for Scoring¶

Block selection can be done on any trial that is a block trial and it is available in the Scoring Configuration Screen. See the video and instructions below for how to select one or more blocks to score.

1.	To choose specific blocks to score, start by choosing a trial and opening the Scoring Configuration Screen.
2.	Swipe across to the Select Blocks Tab.
3.	Check the checkbox for each block that you want to score. You can choose one or more but you will not be allowed to choose no block. Select the Start Scoring Button to begin scoring the blocks.
4.	The Scoring Screen will appear as normal. You can see what blocks are selected by opening Field View.
5.	If you want to select a different block or set of blocks then exit back to the Scoring Configuration Screen to start again.

Field Scoring View¶

Previously there have been two methods of scoring, Path Scoring View, and Sheet Scoring View. There have also been multiple methods of plot navigation with trials such as the Field View. The Field Scoring View is a new scoring method that uses Field View as the default for the Scoring Screen, and selection of a plot opens Sheet Scoring View. The new bulk scoring feature is also exclusively available in Field Scoring View which is outlined in the next section. See below for more information on how to use Field Scoring View:

Scoring in Field Scoring View¶
Step	Action
1.	Find a trial that you want to score and select the Scoring Button. This will open the Scoring Configuration Screen.
2.	Under the Scoring View Section are three radio buttons that enable selection of a Scoring View. Choose the Field View Icon on the right.
3.	Select the Start Scoring Button after all configuration options have been chosen to begin trial scoring in Field Scoring View.
4.	Long Press on a plot to highlight it. This will enter you into Selection Mode where a short press on any other plot will also highlight it. Select all plots that you want to score.
5.	Select the Scoring Button to open up Sheet View. Only the plots you have selected will be present.
6.	Select any plot or sub-plot trait value to open the Trait Scoring Screen then choose a value for it.
7.	Select the Deselect Button to deselect the currently highlighted plots.

Bulk Scoring¶

The new bulk scoring feature allows users to apply a single value to many plots or sub-plots. This can dramatically increase efficiency of scoring in some situations but is only available in Field Scoring View. See the instructions below for how to bulk score plots and sub-plots.

Plot Bulk Scoring¶
Step	Action
1.	Open a trial in Field Scoring View and select the plots that you need to apply the same trait value for. A long-press will enter you into select mode then you can add any plot to your selection.
2.	Select the Plot Bulk Scoring Button to open the Bulk Scoring Screen. All plot traits will be listed and the number of trait that are already scored will be listen in the # Already Scored Column.
3.	Select a trait to open a Trait Scoring Screen. Select a value and you will be automatically returned to the Bulk Scoring Screen.
4.	If there are plots that are already scored, you will need to select the Overwrite Trait Values Checkbox to overwrite the previous values.
5.	The Undo Button for that trait will now be available in case you selected the wrong value.

Note

Sub-plot bulk scoring is the exact same process as bulk scoring plots. However, the Sub-plot Bulk Scoring Button will only be available if there is only one plot selected.
